History

Built at Castle Bromwich August 1943, shipped to No. 33 Maintenance Unit on September 9, 1943 then to No. 405 ARF on September 22, 1943.

Taken on strength at No. 602 Squadron on October 6, 1943, suffered category "B" damage on operations November 4, 1943 and repaired on site.

Taken on strength at 331 Squadron, and had mid air collision with Spitfire Serial No. MH 938 on February 19, 1943. Both aircraft crash landed on Berry Farm, Ongar, Essex MH 724 suffered Category "E" damage, was subsequently repaired and taken on strength at 401 Squadron at Tangmere and coded YOL.

YOL was first tested by Flight Lieutenant W.R. McRae on June 5, 1944 and flew operationally for the first time on D-Day June 6, 1944 for four hours on two separate patrols over the invasion beaches. Its last flight was on July 18, 1944 when it was withdrawn due to Flak damage. During this time it flew 36 operations, some sweeps and dive bombing, but mostly patrolling the beach head and "armed recco's".

Bill McRae was credited with two ME109's destroyed on July 7 and July 27 respectively.

YOL first landed in France on "D" +4 carrying a 500 lb. bomb which was stored for future use. YOL moved to France to stay on June 20, 1944 at B-4 Beny Sur Mer. YOL was at Miles Aircraft Ltd. on October 4, 1944 and shipped to No. 76 Maintenance Unit on January 1, 1945 and then with Mediterrenian Allied Air Forces on February 15, 1945.

MH 724 was stuck off charge on October 31, 1946.



Clark Industries offers the Merlin powered MK-IX, which may be built as the MK-IXB, MK-IXE, MK-VIII, or MK-XVI, and with some modifications could be built as a MK-V.

Clark Industries War Paint has been carefully formulated from RAF Colour chips, in non toxic water based semi gloss Acrylic Latex Enamel. Available now are the following colours: Dark Green, Dark Earth, Ocean Gray, Medium Sea Gray, Sky type S, Cockpit Interior Chromate Green, Trainer Yellow, Roundel Red, Roundel White, Roundel Blue, and Black.

CONSTRUCTION: One piece vinylester fibreglass fuselage already joined with all panel lines moulded in. The wing and stabilizer are of conventional construction with sitka spruce spars, laser cut balsa and plywood ribs, balsa sheeting and 3/4 oz. fibreglass cloth.

The Clark Industries Spitfire kits feature hand laid fibreglass fuselages already joined with all panel lines and Dzus fastener detail moulded in. The engine cowling features scale removeable side panels for easy access to the engine. The firewall and wing mounting blocks are factory installed and the firewall is pre-drilled for the engine mounts. Also supplied are 1/8" ply bulkheads, and an internal air duct for engine cooling which utillizes the scale carburettor air intake, which allows the engine to be totally cowled in with nothing sticking out but the prop and the exhaust stacks!

The 108cc 10 hp. engine has electronic ignition with electronic timing advance for effortless starting, and reliable 800 RPM idle. Also featured are scale functional exhaust stacks with built in mufflers giving 85 db at 20 ft., cable operated throttle and chokes with all throttle linkage installed.

Each engine is test run for one hour. minimum.

A full ignition wiring harness with micro switch is also included.

The heavy duty aluminum spinner houses a 26" dia. 12" pitch 3 blade propeller which has been pre-assembled and balanced before testing on each engine.

The Clark failsafe landing gear are air actuated with oil damper cylinders for scale 3-4 second up cycle and down cycle times. The 7/8" dia. scale oleo legs have spring suspension and scale torque links with Dubro 5 1/2" wheels (four spoke scale hubs are available)Included in the kits are air tank, fittings, hoses, fill and control valves. These gear also feature double down locks for added safety with a toggle up lock to prevent gear sag when pulling out of a dive, if air pressure is lost the gear will come down and lock automatically.
The scale shock absorbing castering tail wheel assy.has a 1/2" sq. aluminum tube mounting strut.

The vacuum formed parts include a .080" Gemex Canopy, and .040" under wing radiator housings and canon magazine fairings.

The Extensive hardware package includes all control cables, bellcranks, clevises, 1/8" custom made music wire push rods, swivel ball links, heavy duty hinges, nuts, bolts, screws, control horns, fuel tank, hoses, fittings, clunk, and filler, servo trays, battery tray, dummy cannons, printed instrument panel (a full cockpit kit with over 100 precision cast and vacuum formed parts is available), sliding canopy track assy's and more. 3/4 oz. glass cloth is supplied for the wing and stab, and Coverite for the rudder and elevator.

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO BUY EXCEPT PAINT GLUE AND RADIO!! Truly the Rolls Royce of Spitfire Kits!
